This Introduction to Sailing clinic will be taught on the J/24 keelboat, pictured above, and is made up of two 3-hour days. Each session will be led by one of our US Sailing certified instructors and will consist of classroom lessons, rigging demonstrations, a water session, de-rigging and stowage procedures, and a de-brief. In this introductory clinic you will learn these skills:

Parts of the Boat, Points of Sail + Sail Trim, Tacking & Gybing, Rigging and De-rigging,

Basic Rules of the Road, Docking, Basic Knot Tying


Breakdown of the class schedule is as follows:

Tuesday - Instruction Heavy Day

  • 20-minute whiteboard lesson - parts of the boat and parts of the sail 
  • 1 hour on-water instructional lesson on rigging, design, and sailing mechanics
  •   First sail with guided steering
  •   Instruction and practice tacking/gybing under mainsail only
  •   Guided de-rigging and docking
  •   Debrief

Thursday - Practice Heavy Day

  • 30-minute whiteboard lesson - points of sail and jib sailing
  • Guided main and jib sailing, both up and downwind
  • Man overboard drill 
  • Practice maintaining headings at different points of sail
  • Docking practice
  • Team de-rigging 
  • Debrief
Please bring your PFD (we have loaners if you do not), closed-toe shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and water bottle. Optional items include hats, towel, and a change of clothes. 

*All participants must have a yearly electronic waiver on file prior to participating.
