SAYC Sailing Center Discovery Sailing is a new program for middle school aged children (10-13 only) this fall where your child will learn and experience what it is like to explore, study, and understand their local ecosystem and waterways in a thorough hands-on learning environment. Not only will your child learn the basics of sailing but they will also engage with a variety of scientific, historical, and environmental topics such as: ecology, physics, local history, marine chemistry, meteorology, engineering, microbiology, and more.
Supported by the US Sailing REACH curriculum, Discovery Sailing is an even mix of instructor led in-depth class room sessions where students will be exposed to and taught a variety of STEM topics and perform science exercises and experiments. While outside of the classroom, students will be seeking out and exploring their local waterways to find real world applications and examples of what they have been learning about all while sailing one of our many different sailboats.
Discovery Sailing is a four week long commitment where kids will meet twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00pm until 7:00pm at our new Sailing Center (8 nights total). During their 3 hour window they will either perform on-land activities related to one of the topics listed previously, or they will go out on the water to document and explore the creeks, rivers, islands and estuaries that exist in St. Augustine close to Salt Run.
Session One days Include: September 1st, 3rd, 8th, 10th, 15th, 17th, 22nd, 24th.
