SAYCSC Sail Team Racing Program
Opti Practice, Opti Development, Opti Green Fleet, Opti Advanced, c420 & Laser Teams
Opti Practice & Development Team is a newer program designed to introduce racing to our youngest and newest sailors. Both teams require basic boat and sailing knowledge; sailors must have at least one week of Sail Camp Opti 2 or previous experience sailing an Optimist, or Sail Director approval. Development and Practice teams DO NOT travel and race at regattas. The Development Team focus is on safety and fun utilizing the SailCube Opti. Practice Team focus is on learning how to navigate a racecourse, a starting sequence, and prepare sailors for racing in a fun way in club owned McLaughlin Optimists.

Opti Green Fleet Team is designed for those who know how to sail and want to learn to race. Opti Green Fleet team practices twice a week on Sundays and Tuesday afternoons. Must have completed at least two weeks of Sail Camp Opti 2 and/or sailed on the Practice or Development team, and show proficiency in rigging, launching, tack and gybing, docking and capsize recovery. Charter boats available, more information, contact Sail Director. 4-6 regattas in the spring season.

Opti Advanced Team (Up to age 15) - Designed for experienced racers with previous Sail Team racing experience only. RWB sailors must provide their own boats. Opti RWB Team has more focused and demanding practices, Green Fleet prerequisite or Sail Director approval. 4-6 travel regattas in the spring season.

Club 420 and Laser Teams (Ages 13 - 17) - Designed for those who know how to sail and want to learn how to race. SAYCSC C420 Team teaches club racing (trapeze and spinnaker) as well as traditional 420 main and jib racing. The 420 team is comprised of new and advanced racers. The Laser and team is for experienced Laser sailors only, boat ownership is required. D-13 and D-12 events. The C420 team and Laser team practice twice a week with a dedicated Laser coach and a dedicated c420 coach. There will be no Laser team in the spring, but will have a full fall season in 2025. Sailboats included for 420 racing. 6 travel regattas in the fall season.

Travel Sail Teams will also have have full-day clinics with past US Sailing team members and both World and North American Champion guest coaches.
Opti Green, Opti Advanced, 420 and Laser teams will attend traveling regattas, Opti Development/Practice will be invited to attend traveling regattas for observation. All sailors and families participate in one public service event each season. Schedules for each team are linked above.
Interested sailors must commit to all practices, clinics, regattas, and maintenance and trailering days. Parental involvement is required, please email Sail Director with questions prior to registering.
Mandatory parent/sailor meeting on Saturday, February 1st for all participants, followed by a racing season kickoff workday at SAYC. First practice is on Sunday, February 2nd.

SAYCSC RB Hunt After School Program Information
The RB Hunt After School program is open to students of RB Hunt only, grades 3-5 only. Our afterschool program consists of one day per week on Monday afternoons, for four consecutive weeks. We will pick your child up from RB Hunt at dismissal and walk them over to SAYC. From 2:45pm - 6:00pm your child will be in our care exploring the Salt Run waterway. Your child will participate in scavenger hunts, sailing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and more. Sailing is conducted on the Hobie Getaway and Flying Scot sailboats. Students may also kayak and paddleboard during their sessions. Pick up will be at SAYC and children need to have a bag packed with closed toe and closed heel water shoes, swimsuit, towel, reusable water bottle and sunscreen, and a change of clothes. Optional items include hat and sunglasses, and outerwear for cooler weather days. Registration cost includes an afterschool snack. Students commit to 4 weeks, Monday afternoon sessions only.
In the event of foul weather, your child will remain under our large, covered deck taking part in STEAM activities until 6:30pm pick up time. Activities include boat building, burgee making, and many other sailing related educational activities.

SAYCSC Little Skippers After School Program Information
Little Skippers after school program is designed for 6-7-year-olds with or without water and sailing experience. Our curriculum is designed to introduce the basics of sailing and water safety and is instructed by adult US Sailing Certified instructors only. Little Skippers will experience sailing on the Hobie Getaway, Hobie Wave, Flying Scot and/or the Opti SailCube sailboats. Students may also use kayaks and paddleboards.
Explore Salt Run and beyond, and have fun sailing!

Adventure Sailing is for those who to explore and enjoy the adventure of sailing, no previous knowledge required. Sailors commit to 4 weeks, Monday afternoon sessions only. Explore Salt Run and beyond, and have fun sailing on the Hobie Getaway, Flying Scot sailboats! Students may also adventure on kayaks and paddleboards. Ages 8-12 welcome. If your child is over the age of 12 and wants to participate, please contact Sail Director.

Please use this event to register for the April 17th powerboat training session. You may elect to pay for this session, or sign an employee advance agreement that will allow for one lump-sum payroll deduction on first paycheck, or equal deductions from first set of paychecks, based on the cost of all sessions this option is selected for.
*Please note, all April and May sessions include both 3 hour and 4 hour sessions. There is a 2 person minimum for all sessions.
*If you need to cancel a session you are registered for you must contact the Sail Director right away. If you cancel within 7 days or more of your registered session you will receive a full refund. If you cancel 6 days in advance or less, you will be charged for the session. Each session is valuable time on the powerboat, please be ready to commit when registering.
Additional dates may be added, but anticipate these being your only available training sessions before your certification weekend with US Sailing.
Private Sailing Lesson at SAYC
This is a three-hour lesson and will be taught on the C420 sailboat pictured below. Please familiarize yourself prior to the lesson if possible. Be sure to fill out the SAYC Learn to Sail waiver and attach to your registration form or bring with you the day of your lesson.

The SAYC Sailing Center beginner Learn to Sail clinic consists of a six-hour day filled with classroom lessons, rigging demonstrations, land drills, a long water session, de-rigging and de-brief. In this beginner clinic you will learn these skills:

Little Skippers Camp (Ages 6 - 7)
Monday to Friday 9:00am to 1:00pm
Designed to introduce water safety basics and a develop a love for the sea, young children will enjoy smaller class sizes and experience sailing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, swimming, and more! Little Skippers will also develop a basic awareness of wind and tide as well as learn basic knot tying skills.
*SAYCSC Little Skippers is a shortened-day program, with pick up at 1:00pm. To stay the full day (9:00am - 3:00pm), you must register your Little Skipper for the Extended Day event.
While daily Sail Camp structure varies by program, your child will have two on-water sessions per day, including swim breaks, snack breaks, a lunch break, and daily knot tying sessions before dismissal.
Each sailor will receive their Sail Camp shirt (included in the registration fee) on Thursday afternoon pick-up. Friday is Sail Camp shirt day - every camper should wear their shirt to camp for the day. Please choose size wisely, you will only receive what is ordered on registration form. Shirts are given out on the first week of attendance only. There is an option to purchase additional shirts on the registration form.

Adventure Camp (Ages 13 - 17)
Monday to Friday 9:00am to 3:00pm
Utilizing kayaks, SUPs (stand-up paddle boards), sailboats and more, your child(ren) will learn about the Salt Run environment through exploration and adventure. Daily challenges, sailing on Hobie Cats and Flying Scots, scavenger hunts, picnics, swimming and water games are just a few of the activities your child will experience through the week. Your child will not learn how to sail their own boat, but will experience sailing on multiple boats as well as learn basic wind, weather, and tide knowledge and basic knot tying skills.
*Minimum participation required to fill each age bracket for Adventure Camp. Should minimums not be met, there will be one combined Adventure Camp group that week (ages 8 – 17).

Adventure Camp (Ages 8 - 12)
Sail Camp - Opti I (Ages 10 - 12 ONLY)
Sail Camp - Opti I is designed for beginners with little to no sailing experience. By the end of the week, your child will learn these skills:
*Skill levels are assessed on the first day of camp. If your child does not have racing experience, or has not attended Sail Camp since last summer, their first week of camp must be in the Opti I group. If it is determined that your child needs to be in a different group, you will be notified.

Sail Camp - 420/Laser (Ages 13 - 17)
Sail Camp - 420/Laser is designed for an older age group. The 420 sailboat is a double-handed, heavier and more challenging boat, and the Laser is a larger, single-handed and much more challenging boat than an Opti. Both boats require a larger body size and weight, making them perfect boats for teens. This program can accommodate all skill levels - beginner, intermediate and advanced sailors welcome. Sailors will also experience sailing on our Hobie Cats and Flying Scot sailboats. By the end of the week, your child will learn these skills:
*420/Laser participants must be 13 - 17 and must weigh a minimum of 110lbs. If your child is 13-15 and does not meet these requirements, please register them for the older Opti beginner group. For safety reasons, the only exceptions to this policy is previous sailing or racing experience in a 420 or Laser.
Sail Camp - Opti I (Ages 8 & 9 ONLY)
Each sailor will receive their Sail Camp shirt (included in registration fee) on Thursday afternoon pick-up. Friday is Sail Camp shirt day - every camper should wear their shirt to camp for the day. Please choose size wisely, you will only receive what is ordered on registration form. Shirts are given out on the first week of attendance only. SAYCSC Little Skippers Camp runs from 9:00am - 1:00pm M - F.

Sail Camp - Opti II is designed for intermediate and advanced Opti sailors only. Prior sailing experience is required. Sailors will spend a majority of the week in McLaughlin Optis (fiberglass boats with bladder bags) and will focus on upwind sailing and be introduced to racing. Students will also sail our Hobie Cats and Flying Scot sailboats.
In order to register for Opti II, your sailor must already know:
*Skill levels are assessed on the first day of camp. If your child has not participated in our Sail Team program or does not have racing experience, their first week of camp must to be in the Opti I group. If it is determined that your child needs to be in a different group, you will be notified.
*You must be registered for Little Skippers - Week 3 event in order to sign up.
